- Initial processing: i.e. brew, heat treat and forming also have effect on wear.

- It was found, the harder the heat treat, the lower the volumetric material removal rate, all else equal. A project that took this into account found a 5:1 difference in metal removal rate between T1 and T6.
- The porosity resulting from casting will wear the tool. Porosity is essentially interrupted cuts. PCD will chip at the shock.
- Particulate size, shape and density can significantly effect results. For a given Matrix material, one study found, that with a moderate decrease in particulate diameter (27%) a tool life increase of almost 500% was found. It was shown that it can be related to the standard Kinetic Energy Equation for a moving body - K.E.=1/2mv2, where the particulate is considered moving relative to the tool edge.
