Economic Comparison for Machining MMC Parts - Brake Rotors
- Prof. Schmenk - Miami University, Oxford, OH
- William J. Zdeblick - IAMS
1. Gross Production: 1 part/0.379 min. X 1440 min./day
.
= 3800 rotors/day
2. Net Production at 50% Machine utilization: .5 X 3800
= 1900 rotors/day
3. Direct Labor Expense at $20.00/hr: $20 X 24 hrs
. = $480/day
4. Machine expense at 5 times direct labor rate: 5 X $20 X 24 hrs
.. = $2400/day
5. Carbide/Ceramic tool replacement expense
.. = $402/day
6. Estimated machining cost per part: Add Items 3, 4 and 5. Divide by Item 2
($480 + $2400 + $402) / 1900 rotors/day
. = $1.72 per rotor
Estimated Machining Cost for Cast Iron Rotors
Notes:
This is an attempt at cost estimation done in a study at the Institute, in conjunction with Miami of Ohio.
It was done in 93 - representing a transfer line operation
The tooling costs were estimated by determining, for each station, the frequency of tool replacement through a 24 hr. period
