Estimated Machining Cost for MMC Rotors
1. Gross Production: 1 part/0.253 min. X 1440 min./day
.
... = 5692 rotors/day
2. Net Production at 55% Machine utilization: .55 X 3800
...
... = 3131 rotors/day
3. Direct Labor Expense at $20.00/hr: $20 X 24 hrs
= $480/day
4. Machine expense at 5 times direct labor rate: 5 X $20 X 24 hrs
.. = $2400/day
5. PCD tool replacement expense
...
.. = $2048/day
6. Estimated machining cost per part: Add Items 3, 4 and 5. Divide by Item 2
($480 + $2400 + $2048) / 3131 rotors/day
.. = $1.57 per rotor
This is a conservatively-estimated cost
savings of $0.15 per rotor...
Notes:
This is from the same study
PCD tools were compared by estimating a tool life at 45 mins., as compared to carbide tools at 30 mins. of tool life.
Under these assumptions, PCD tools, although they have a significantly higher initial cost, can prove to be cost effective.
