PPT Slide
- Control and adjust material properties
- Alloy, Temper (heat treat), Reinforcement Geometry and Density
- Optimize Casting, Molding Functions
- Near Net Shape, Minimize Porosity, Control Homogeneity
- Optimize Machining Parameters
- Maximize chip thickness to maximize tool life per mm3 (in3) metal removed.
- Use diamond tooling for abrasion resistance
Conventional Wisdom - MMCs are Too Expensive to Machine, Primarily Due to the Cost of
PCD Tooling.
Notes:
- These are Engineered Materials. Engineer them. Maximize your potential for
success by considering, up front, the variables that are at you disposal.
- Adjust the constituents to give the mechanical properties required, that also allow the
best chance to machine successfully.
- Consistency in the mix will also help in the machining process. Dont want to run
in to a high concentration of ceramic all of a sudden.
- Heat treat does effect, as mention above.
- Porosity is an issue
- Use the tools at your disposal to get the most from the material.
