Tooling

• These tools have multiple edges - changing the cost structure considerably:
  • PCD cost per edge - apx. $100.00
  • CVD cost per edge - apx. $15.00
  •  

• In the Brake Rotor example sited earlier, the cost per day of PCD tools was estimated at $2048.
  • 45.5 tools per day in the example operation (single edge/tool)
  • in’93 the cost per insert used was $70 (up to $100/insert today)
  • a regrind charge of $20 was included

• In the same way, the cost per day for CVD tools would be:

(45.5 edges/4 edges per tool) x $50 per insert = $568.75)

Notes:

• This shows what would happen if only the cost of the tool changed.

• Is there machining advantage to these tools?
  • Higher speeds? Greater Material Removal Rate? Longer life?
  • Further testing is needed to answer these questions.

• It can be said that these tools are less expensive per edge.
